Vonniss' Memoirs: ENTRY 5

Things got awkward really fast aboard the ship. The Jawa explained to the captain how useful I was going to be. I thought he meant because of my astronavigational skills, but then he pulled up my bounty which was up to 10,000 credits!--AND COUNTING! Why does it keep going up!? Silver lining: It says "wanted for questioning" which sounds like "alive" rather than dead. Hopefully all the bounty hunters waste time looking for the ship or Bento and the rest of the gang and don't focus on me.

It hurt a bit to watch the captain fly the ship. Don't get me wrong, he was doing much better than most, but I could tell he didn't have the benefit of attending flight academy and most likely learned over some smuggler's shoulder. Still, I didn't let on to the captain or the Jawa that I had extensive flight training... just in case.

Anyway, the jumps we had to make were insane. I quickly started to worry it was a trick to jump us into a star. In fact, I think we almost bit it on one of the jumps, but I barely caught an error in time. These guys would have been so screwed if I hadn't been here! After that incident, I started to trust the data their contact gave us even less. The last jump I did some extra calculations on and shaved 5 hours off the trip. It'd be wishful thinking to assume they recognized what I was able to do and not want to collect the bounty at this point.

When we popped in for our pickup, it was a wreck. Literally. There was ship wreckage burning up in the atmosphere of a nearby planet. Another was mostly intact, but the cockpit had been breached and was bursting with killer droids. The captain--what a ballsy human! Get this: He went out in space to try and connect to the other ship and ends up in a shootout with one of the droids I mentioned.

I was extra cautious and kept scanning for ships so we didn't get caught with our pants down. Speaking of which, the console was so dusty, I had to wonder if they knew the sensor controls were over here. Anyway, I'll admit it was a tough choice not to fly the hell outta' there when the captain went out the airlock. I was sitting there in the cockpit, but the little animal had somehow crawled up into a gun turret and I'm sure that thing would have blown us up--or worse--if I took off. He'd turned the droid the captain was engaged with to dust, so he definitely knew how to use the thing.

The captain hooked us up to the ship's cockpit and we were able to start talking to the life signs I had detected. Ultimately we all boarded and had to confront more killer droids. I wanted to downplay my blaster skills in case these two decided to cash in on my warrant, but these droids were going to kill us! The captain had blaster skills too and landed hits, but I couldn't wait for him to whittle 'em down, so I took 'em both out.

When we made it into the cargo bay, there was only one survivor left and the captain started rushing toward what I eventually learned was an explosive device, shouting not to blow us all up.I eyed the door, but decided if this thing went off, our ship was probably toast, so all for one and one for all, right? Turns out a droid was holding it and I think the captain was going to be a hero and cover it with his body or something, but the feral Jawa went flying through the air and did it instead! It had somehow managed to turn the explosive into spare parts and the rapid beeping suddenly stopped. Honestly I'm concerned the captain lets this thing loose on his ship. Side note: With these two would-be heroes ready to leap onto a grenade... It might be worth the risk to stick it out in case they jump on a grenade meant for me and I end up with a ship.

Anyway, the captain may have hit the droid, but I wasn't going to take any chances. I went ahead and disabled it with my blaster and watched as the Jawa started playing with the barely-functioning droid. I know it's just a droid, but I'm hoping he doesn't act the same way around folk that are dying. I saw Bento doing that same exact thing, but with a human girl as she bled out. Chills.
